The hornets MFC was founded in 1975 by a group six flyers including present members Howard Moreton and John Warder.

Flying at the then disused airport at Sandown the club was affiliated to the SMAE (BMFA) from the outset.

After moving to numerous sites the club with its fifty or so members included two BMFA examiners finally settled at the present site of Bembridge airfield in 1996.
